As reported, the village of Winnetka, Illinois has repealed is 20-year-old ban on handguns, thanks to the NRA and 3 law abiding citizens who fought to restore their right to have handguns for self defense:
After the Supreme Court reaffirmed that handgun ownership is an individual right, the NRA filed lawsuits against Chicago and other Illinois cities that banned handguns. Evanston, Morton Grove, and Wilmette, wisely repealed their handgun bans, allowing law abiding citizens to own gun for self defense against handgun ban ignoring criminals. Today, Winnetka has shown common sense as well, and repealed its handgun ban.
The city of Chicago and village of Oak Park have decided to fight expensive and likely losing battles to keep their handgun bans, which do not prevent crime, and only leave law abiding citizens vulnerable. Chicago has had a handgun ban for decades, yet it is the murder capitol of the United States. Oak Park has also had a handgun ban for more than 20 years, yet there are weekly armed robberies and occasional murders with handguns. The inescapable truth is that a criminal who is willing to commit armed robbery or murder won’t think twice about breaking the law that says they can’t own a gun. The result is that criminals are still armed, and the good members of society are unarmed, and therefore more vulnerable to home invasions, attacks by an abusive ex, and being shot while at work. Armed citizens can save their own lives, while residents of cities that ban handguns are left unable to prevent their own murders.
