As reported, three 16 year olds and one 17 year old broke in to a house on Chestnut street in San Marcos, TX at 2AM, armed with a handgun and two pellet guns. The homeowner heard the commotion from the break in, and grabbed his .40 S&W Glock handgun. When the home owner opened his bedroom door to investigate, one of the criminals pointed a gun at him, police say. Fearing for his safety, the home owner opened fire on the intruders. Two of the 16 year old home invaders were killed, and the third alleged 16 year old intruder was wounded. The unharmed 17 year old alleged intruder has been charged with aggravated robbery, and the surviving 16 year old is expected to face charges as well. The home owner was unharmed, and no charges are expected.
There are those who decry self defense shootings when the dead criminals turn to be teenagers, as happened here. To that, I would say a few things. Firstly, a 16 year old male is often near the peak of his physical strength, and can pose quite a threat if violent. This is especially true when, as here, the 16 year olds in question were armed. Secondly, while a 16 year old likely lacks the judgment of a 40 year old, they certainly know right from wrong, and are no longer children. Virtually every 16 year old who commits robbery does so with the understanding that their actions are illegal and dangerous, and cannot reasonably claim age as an excuse. Thirdly, second guessing a citizen who defends themselves is almost never proper, as discussed in greater detail here. Finally, while it is sad that these young lives are over, just as any loss of life is sad, it is far better that a criminal suffer than his innocent victim.
People gotta understand that trespassing is against the law and, God bless the USA, and the 2nd admendment, because if you break into a property, you better have a good life or health insurance policy. DO NOT MESS with private property!!!!
