As the Chicago Tribune reports, two people were shot by a gunman on a bicycle in Chicago.
The shootings occurred just before 4:30 p.m. when a criminal opened fire from a bicycle, on the 2900 block of N. Elston Avenue. Chicago police stated that the shootings appeared to be gang related. Sadly, this violence is nothing new for Chicago, which has seen a sharp increase in the murder rate , shootings after the Taste of Chicago, and over 30 shootings in a weekend this year.
The overwhelming majority of this type of violent crime is perpetrated by criminals with handguns, despite Chicago’s longstanding and likely unconstitutional handgun ban, and the state and federal laws that prohibit felons from possessing guns. Rather than recognizing that the criminals who really want guns will always get them, and a handgun ban only disarms the peaceful members of society, cities like Chicago and Oak Park have decided to fight to keep their likely unconstitutional handgun bans. Sadly, taxpayer money will now go towards an effort to deprive the law abiding citizens of their constitutional right to own a handgun for self defense, rather than spending that taxpayer money to help stop crime.
