As reported, a 62 year old Toledo resident shot a burglar in self defense, after the burglar advanced on him despite two warnings to “freeze.”
Police say that the homeowner was asleep at about 10:40 PM when an unexpected noise caused him to awaken and believe that a burglary was in progress. The homeowner then reportedly heard the sound of an intruder climbing the stairs towards, heading his bedroom. The armed homeowner ordered the burglar to freeze, but the footsteps up the stairs continued, police say. The homeowner is said to have held his fire, and again ordered the criminal to freeze, to no avail. Fearing for his safety, the homeowner reportedly fired in self defense, stopping the burglar. Police reportedly arrived to find the homeowner unharmed, and the burglar dead at the scene.
Once again, gun ownership has allowed a law abiding person to defend themselves against a criminal who broke in during the night. Had this 62 year old man not been armed, he could have been tortured, killed, or otherwise harmed by an intruder who cared more about making a quick buck than the life of their victim. Luckily, this man was armed, and as a result survived this home invasion unharmed. The city of Toledo also seems to owe this homeowner a debt of gratitude, since there is now one fewer home invading burglar on the streets.
