As reported, a Basalt, Colorado burglary suspect was scared off by one armed homeowner, then held at gunpoint by a second armed homeowner:
Police say that the burglar went to the first house at about 9:30pm, and was lurking outside a window when the homeowner’s dogs alerted her to his presence. After realizing that the noise was from a would-be intruder, the woman reportedly grabbed her .38 handgun, yelled that she had a gun, and displayed the gun, causing the burglar to flee after he saw the pistol through a window. Police arrived and found that a purse had been stolen from a vehicle on the property, and began looking for the burglar. Meanwhile, the burglar is said to have broken into a second house, where he stole items from the garage, before heading to a third home. At this house, the homeowner reportedly heard the burglar and grabbed his 9mm handgun, at which point the intruder tried to flee. The homeowner was able to apprehend the burglary suspect, with the help of a neighbor, and held him at gunpoint until the police could arrive, police say. 19 year old Nahum Obed Herrera was reportedly arrested for second-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass, two counts of attempted first-degree criminal trespass, and being a minor in possession of alcohol, according to police.
This is yet another example of guns being used for self defense, without a shot even being fired. Anti gun statistics don’t count such uses, despite the fact that the majority of the 2.5 million defensive gun uses each year don’t result in the gun being fired at all. The fact is that guns stop crime and save lives, often without the need to fire a single shot.
