The County Sheriffs of Colorado have opposed the introduction of new anti gun laws, calling the anti-gun reaction after Sandy Hook “hasty.”
According to the Denver Post, the non-partisan group of sheriffs say that hasty reactions to the recent mass shootings in Aurora and in Newtown, Connecticut should not result in the introduction of new gun control measures.
The County Sheriffs oppose an assault weapons ban and a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines.
“Law enforcement officers carry high capacity magazines because there are times when 10 rounds might not be enough to end the threat,” the group wrote. “County Sheriffs of Colorado believe the same should hold true for civilians who wish to defend themselves especially if attacked by multiple assailants.”
I commend these members of law enforcement for respecting the rights of law abiding citizens to defend themselves. Knee-jerk reactions such as the calls for anti gun laws in the wake of a tragic shooting are not the answer. Gun control simply does not work to stop criminals, and instead merely serves to ensure that law-abiding citizens are left defenseless.
